ABOUT THE ARTIST: TERRY MEARS
When Sedona artist Terry Mears first saw the Sedona area almost thirty years ago, he knew right away that: "This is where anyone who knows what is good for him would surely want to be!"

Having received his B/A. in Astrophysics at Indiana University, "I was on my way to UCLA to do graduate work, and fell in love with the land and the people," vowing someday to return here to live.

While working in the electronics industry for several years, he began woodworking as a hobby. " I love working with burl because you never have to make a straight line," quips Terry.

"As a scientist you seek external truth. An artist finds truth internally. It's sort of mathematical really. When you view a beautifully shaped piece of wood in nature, your mind resonates between stable and chaotic states, much like the wood itself."

"With the finest pieces, a moment of doubt is created, allowing the viewer to become part of the creative process. At some point, when the trees are growing, conditions changed, negative and positive feedback loops coupled together, creating a dynamic balance - a bifurcation point where chaotic activity suddenly branches off into order, creating a weird form. It's fascinating that we can all be part of this."

His first loves are Manzanita and Juniper, although Buckeye and Redwood often find their way onto his workbench. "You look at the incredibly bizarre forms that these woods take and can only wonder what forces could have conspired to produce them!"
